Gutter guard installation service in Jackson, MI
Gutter guards cover the top of the gutter so leaves stay on the roof edge and blow off instead of packing into the trough and downspout. On a house under trees, they turn cleaning from a twice-a-year ladder job into an occasional brush-off. (You'll still clean them now and then.) Our gutter guard installation service starts by matching the guard to the trees around your house.
Which guard works best depends on what your trees drop. Almost any guard stops big leaves.
Pine needles, maple seeds and oak tassels slip through coarse screens and need a fine stainless micro-mesh. Houses with no trees nearby often don't need guards at all.
Signs gutter guards would pay off
- You clean the gutters more than twice a year and they're full again within weeks.
- Downspouts clog, and water pours over the front of the gutter at the outlet during storms.
- Seedlings or moss are growing in the gutter.
- Branches from oaks, maples or pines overhang the roof.
- The gutters are high enough that cleaning them yourself isn't safe.
Gutter guard types compared
| Guard type | Stops | Weak spots |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless micro-mesh on an aluminum frame | Leaves, pine needles, seeds, oak tassels, most shingle grit | Fine pollen and dust can film the mesh and need brushing. Highest cost. |
| Perforated aluminum screen | Large leaves | Needles and seeds lodge in the holes |
| Reverse curve (surface tension) hood | Leaves | Heavy rain can overshoot the curve. Visible from the street. |
| Foam or brush inserts | Some leaves | Hold debris and moisture, break down. Rarely a good long-term choice. |
On most Jackson homes with mixed hardwoods or pines, a rigid micro-mesh guard that screws to the gutter lip is the type that keeps working. Snap-in plastic screens from the hardware store tend to sag and pop out after a winter.
How gutter guards behave in a Michigan winter
Snow and ice will sit on top of any guard in Jackson. We get roughly 37 inches of snow a year and a long run of freeze-thaw cycles, and an unguarded gutter fills with the same ice. What matters is that:
- The guard is rigid and fastened to the gutter, so sliding snow doesn't peel it off.
- The guard is pitched to match the roof, so meltwater on sunny days runs into the mesh rather than over it.
- The gutter underneath is hung on hangers close enough together to carry the combined weight.
Ice dams start higher on the roof, from attic heat melting snow, so guards won't stop them. If you get heavy icicles every winter, that's an insulation and ventilation question, and guards won't change it.
What our gutter guard installation service involves
- Clean and flush the gutters and downspouts first. Putting guards over debris traps it.
- Check the gutters. Guards add a little weight and are only as good as the gutter under them. Loose hangers, bad pitch and leaking corners are fixed before guards go on.
- Fit and fasten the guards under the first course of shingles or to the gutter back edge, depending on the product and roof, and screw them to the front lip.
- Trim around corners and valleys, where water volume is highest and guards most often fail if cut poorly.
- Water test at valleys and corners.
If your gutters are near the end of their life, it usually makes sense to replace them and add guards in one visit. See seamless gutter installation for that option.
What affects the cost of gutter guards
- Linear feet of gutter to cover.
- Type of guard. Stainless micro-mesh costs more than perforated aluminum.
- Number of corners, valleys and roof transitions that need custom fitting.
- Height and roof pitch.
- Repairs needed to the existing gutters before guards can go on.
- Whether gutters are being installed at the same time.
When a clogged gutter becomes urgent
Guards are a planned upgrade, but the problem they solve can become urgent. If a packed gutter is overflowing straight down the foundation and your basement is taking water, or if a clogged gutter froze solid and is pulling away from the house, deal with that first. Call for gutter cleaning or gutter repair, then plan guards.
Maintenance after guards are installed
Look at the guards from the ground each spring and fall. Leaves sitting on top usually blow off once they dry.
Every year or 2, brush the mesh surface where maple seeds or pollen have built up, and flush the downspouts. Shingle grit still gets into gutters slowly, so a guarded gutter still needs an occasional check.
Guards are an add-on to a working gutter system. If you're still deciding on the gutters themselves, start with our page on new gutters for Jackson homes.
Gutter guard questions
Do gutter guards work with pine needles?
Only fine mesh guards do. Pine needles slide through perforated screens and wedge in the holes, which can make cleaning harder than having no guard. Stainless micro-mesh stops them.
Will gutter guards void my roof warranty?
Some guard styles slide under the first row of shingles, and some shingle manufacturers' warranty terms address that. Guards that attach to the gutter only avoid the issue. Check your roof warranty, and we can choose a guard that doesn't touch the shingles.
Can gutter guards be installed on my existing gutters?
Usually, if the gutters are in good shape, properly pitched and firmly attached. Guards on sagging or leaking gutters just cover up a problem.
Are gutter guards worth it if I only have a few trees?
Often not. If your gutters only need one easy cleaning a year, the cost of guards takes a long time to pay back. They earn their cost on houses under heavy tree cover, on tall houses, or for owners who can't safely use a ladder.
