Gutter repair service in Jackson, MI

Most gutter repairs fall into 4 groups: leaks at a seam, corner or outlet; runs that sag or pull away; downspouts that are loose, crushed or disconnected; and sections bent or torn off by ice, a falling limb or a ladder. All 4 are fixable without replacing the system, as long as the rest is sound. Our gutter repair service handles each of them on homes in Jackson and the surrounding townships.

The first thing to check: is the gutter clean? A surprising number of "leaks" are water overflowing from a clogged outlet. If the gutter is clear and still drips or sags, it needs a repair.

Why gutter seams and corners open up in Jackson winters

Jackson's snowy season runs roughly from mid-November to early April, and through much of it the temperature crosses freezing over and over. Water in a gutter freezes at night, expands, thaws in the afternoon sun, and freezes again.

Each cycle pushes on the sealant at corners and joints, and on the fasteners holding the gutter to the house. That's why many of the repair calls in this area come in March and April: the damage happened over the winter and shows up with the first spring rain.

It also explains why an outlet clogged in November causes more trouble here than in a warmer climate. Standing water in a blocked gutter becomes a block of ice that bends the gutter and loosens hangers.

What a gutter repair service visit involves

  1. Find the actual source. Water travels along the underside of a gutter before it drips, so the drip you see may be several feet from the leak. We look from the ladder.
  2. Clear the gutter where we're working. Sealant won't bond over dirt and shingle grit.
  3. Make the repair. Reseal joints after cleaning them to bare metal, replace end caps, add hidden hangers, re-fasten into solid wood, reset the pitch so water reaches the outlet, or replace a damaged section.
  4. Check the rest of the run for the next weak spot, so you know what to expect.
  5. Water test to confirm the leak is gone and water flows to the downspout.

If the fascia behind the gutter is soft, the screws won't hold no matter how many are added. In that case we repair the board first, then rehang the gutter.

What affects the cost of gutter repair

  • How many separate problems there are, and whether they're on the same side of the house.
  • Height. A second-story corner takes more setup than a garage eave.
  • Whether a damaged section can be fixed or needs a new seamless piece formed for that run.
  • Fascia rot found behind a loose gutter.
  • Matching the color and profile of an older gutter, which may not be available anymore.

When repair costs start to approach the cost of new gutters on that side of the house, we'll say so. A section-by-section gutter replacement is sometimes the better use of the money.

When gutter repair can't wait

We're available 24/7. Call right away, day or night, if:

  • A section is hanging after a storm or ice slide, over a door, walkway or driveway.
  • Water is sheeting off a failed section onto entry steps and freezing.
  • Water runs behind the gutter and stains appear on interior ceilings or walls near the eave.
  • Each rain puts water in the basement because a downspout is detached or the gutter above is dumping at the foundation.

Until the repair, keep people and vehicles out from under a hanging section, and don't try to pull down a gutter loaded with ice.

What to watch after a repair

Look at the repaired spot during the next steady rain. Then check corners and outlets each spring, because winter is when they fail.

If the same run keeps needing work, check the pitch and the downspout capacity. Adding an outlet or moving to a larger downspout can stop repeat failures.

Gutter repair service questions

Can a leaking gutter seam just be caulked?

Caulk over a dirty, wet joint usually fails within a season. A lasting repair means cleaning the joint to bare metal, drying it and using a sealant made for gutters. On sectional gutters with many joints, resealing all of them is often a temporary measure.

Why does my gutter sag in the same place every winter?

Either the hangers there are too far apart or loose, or the gutter isn't pitched and water pools at that spot, freezes and adds weight. Adding hangers and resetting the pitch usually fixes it. If the fascia is soft at that spot, that comes first.

Can you repair gutters after storm damage for an insurance claim?

Yes. Insurers usually ask for photos of the damage and a written estimate for the repair or replacement, and our estimates are free and written.

Take your own photos before anything is moved. Whether the damage is covered is between you and your insurer.

Do you repair vinyl gutters?

Small vinyl repairs such as a new end cap or connector are possible, but cracked vinyl usually means more cracks are coming. Many owners replace a failing vinyl run with seamless aluminum.
